Nothing is more rewarding than family time. And Harris Township residents are blessed to have an amazing array of locations in our own backyards that are perfect for creating lifelong memories.

What's more, there are tons of ways you can introduce your kids to community service in fun, low-key ways that will start conversations, thoughts, and lifestyle decisions that will have an impact for years to come.  Here are just a few ideas to get you started. • The next time you decide to visit a local park or playground, take a plastic grocery bag with you to pick up any trash you may encounter.

• Here's a twist on an old-fashioned favorite: help your kids hold a lemonade (or other yummy snack) stand with the goal of donating their earnings to a local non-profit organization. It will teach them important business skills, as well as the value of giving back and paying it forward.

• Call or visit any of our local churches and ask them what kinds of household items they would like for donations. Something as simply as paper towels or common office supplies can go a long way for a local group and are simple and easy for kids to help you buy and donate.

• Have your kids pick a few friends and invite them and their families to Tussey Mountain for a Neighborhood Go-Kart Showdown!

• Build a tradition that twice a year, or once a season, your kids can go through their toys and select some that they don't pay with anymore that can be donated to local churches, daycares, or even the Salvation Army Store on Atherton Street.
